Minister Advocates Need For Collaboration To Boost Sporting Activities In Nigera

The Federal Ministry of Science and Technology is collaborating with the Federal Ministry of Sports and Youths development in advancing a strong base in sporting activities in Nigeria.

According to a statement by Taye Akinyemi, Chief Press Secretary to the Minister of Science and Technology, this indication was made by the Honourable Minister Dr Ogbonnaya Onu, when members of the Main Organizing Committee (MOC) of the Dr Akanu Ibiam Super Cup Competition paid him a courtesy visit in his office today.

The Minister stated that the Buhari led government is working assiduously to ensure that the rule of law prevails and that the fight against corruption is sustained when we eulogise some of our heroes in the past, who lived a life worthy of emulation.

Dr Onu affirmed that sports is a vital instrument in developing national unity, whereby the youths will be brought together to interact and familiarize themselves across the length and breadth of the country.

He further asserted that technology plays an important role in the world of sports. This he said calls for continuous drive for research and innovation to enhance national development in Nigeria.

The Minister further stated that the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology is collaborating with her sport counterpart to ensure that Nigerian youths are encouraged to develop their potentials and talents in sporting activities as well as build careers in the area of science and technology.

The leader of the delegation, Dr Ademola Are, in his opening remarks, informed the Minister that the Committee’s mission to the ministry was to seek collaboration and support in the areas of sports and youth development in Nigeria.

He also intimated the minister of the need to entrench the virtues of a great Nigerian, Late Dr Akanu Ibiam to the younger generation through the academy established in his memory. He also appealed for branding of some of the sporting gear through some of the agencies under the purview of the ministry.

In this respect, he requested that an agency under the Ministry, which is the National Research Institute for Chemical Technology (NARICT) Zaria, be requested to produce branded footballs that will be used for the competition.
