South West States of Nigeria- Ekiti, Ondo, Ogun, Osun and Oyo States have declared Monday, June 12, 2017 public holiday to honour and remember the winner of the June 12, 1993 Presidential election, Chief Moshood Abiola.

Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State said while declaring the public holiday in his state that the Late Abiola made a supreme sacrifice that led in the hurried departure of the military from the political stage in 1999.

A statement by his media aide, Segun Ajiboye said the State government is holding a lecture with the theme “ June 12: A celebration of courage and resilience.

Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose said he joined his colleagues in the South West in the spirit of the unity of the region, saying the Yoruba nation’s interest is beyond personal interest of anyone.

The Ogun State government while declaring the public holiday said it was in line with the practice in the past years to identify with and keep the ideals of June 12.

The Osun State government joined the fray saying that the public holiday became imperative in view of the fact that June 12 marked a watershed in the history of democratic evolution of the country.
