Following the alleged killing of a python by  men of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and Imo Security Network in Owerr, the Imo Zoological Garden have threatened legal action against men of the two agencies.

This website had Friday reported that a python was killed at Ikemba Ojukwu centre in Owerri.

A spokesman of the Zoological Garden, Mr Francis Abiyola was quoted to condemned the killing of a male python by the two security agencies.  He said rather than kill the python and selling it, it should have been captured and conserved for tourism purposes.

The News Agency of Nigeria quoted Abiyola saying that he warned that a female python was within the area and should not be harmed  for whatever reason. He added that if it is seen, the management of the Garden should be contacted.

He said there are laws protecting animals and such laws should be obeyed.

“How can security officers who should know the law kill a python that was not after their lives?” he asked.

He recalled how a crocodile captured at the home of the former Special Adviser to Imo State Governor on Social Media, Ikechukwu Ogbonna became a major asset to the zoo.
