Over three hundred persons of the Deaf Association stormed Government House, Owerri, demanding for their 12 million Naria suvbention.
The angry deaf persons made serious attempts to force their way into the premises of Government House but were strongly rebuffed by stern looking security men.
To wade off the aggression of the visibly angry Deaf demonstrators, the security men had to fire warning gunshots in the air.
They surged on as they were not deterred by the action of the security personnel.
They complained that the State Governor,Owelle Rochas Okorocha had neglected them by abandoning their welfare, packages and annual suvbentions.
This was revealed by the Chairman of the group, Mr. Uzoma Edwards who said for the past 12 years they have not received their suvbention which has amounted to over 12 million Naria.
He spoke with the aid of an interpreter, a Reverend sister.
They also alleged that the government had ‘grossly marginalised ’ members of the association in employment , empowerment opportunities and official programmes .
The association ’s chairman said members were angry that the state government had yet to approve
its proposal for the state to host the sixth edition of the National Deaf Football Championship in 2018.
While demanding two vehicles from the state government for members ’ use , the protesters also
sought to be included in the government ’s empowerment of 305 millionaires which was concluded last week.
They strongly demanded for the re opening of the office of the Special Assistant on Deaf Matters to the Governor and the rehabilitation of the special education centre in the State.
They called for the rehabilitation of the Deaf and Dumb school located along Wethedral road, Owerri.
