The remains of Somtochukwu Ibeanusi, the 10 year old boy gunned down during the demolition of the Eke Ukwu Owerri market by the Imo State government has been buried.
Ibeanusi’s death had caused uproar across the country attracting widespread condemnation from well meaning Nigerians.
The Imo State government has consistently denied that it had a hand in Ibeanusi’s death saying anyone with proof that the boy was killed during the demolition of the market should come forward with such claims.
The Government’s postulation did not gone down well as many testify that Ibeanusi was a victim of a gunshot that was fired when Owerri youths engaged security forces on the day the market was demolished.
Several groups had consoled the Ibeanusi family who reside at No.9 Oguamanam street in Owerri over the death of their son, Somtochukwu.
The opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in Imo State had directed its members to attend a special church service to mourn the slain 10 year old.
Parents of the deceased have severally recounted how their young son was racing down to the market to help remove some of his mother’s wares before he was hit by a stray bullet.
They called for justice.
The Imo State Police Command, had assured that it has begun investigation into the alleged killing of Somtochukwu during the demolition of the market.
The Police Public Relations Officer, (PPRO), Andrew Enwerem, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, had in a statement warned against hate speeches.
“The Police Command has begun full scale investigation into the alleged death of one Somtochukwu Ibeanusi, reported to the Police on August 27, 2017. Investigators have interviewed the parents and will stop at nothing in ensuring that the circumstances and ramifications of the matter are unraveled,” the statement said.
