In order to put a check to the menace of flood in Owerri metropolis, the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA has advised the Imo State government to demolish all houses situated along waterways in the city.
This step, according to the agency, will check the ravaging effects of flooding in the state.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) quoted Evans Ugoh, the Co- ordinator of NEMA operations in Owerri saying that the state government should summon “uncommon willpower to demolish houses built on waterways and ensure close monitoring of contractors in the state”
Owerri was submerged by flood last Thursday after a heavy downpour which which caused so much havoc in Federal Housing Estate, Egbu, in Owerri North and World Bank area of Owerri West Local Government.
NEMA had in a statement after it visited the flood areas said that no fewer than 3,000 people were affected by the disaster and over N50 million worth of properties were also destroyed as a result of the flooding.
The agency had also disassociated itself from reports on the social media that NEMA blamed the flood disaster on the state governor.
