Can Imo APGA Contain Its New Converts? BY SHEDRACK IGWE

*APGA*

The All Progressive Grand Alliance, APGA in Imo State has suddenly become the new destination of some top politicians in Imo State. The party has become the safe haven for aggrieved politicians who left the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP and the All Progressive Congress, APC. Many wonder if their defection to Late Odumegwu Ojukwu’s political party is really for the love of the party or is it to seek ways of reviving their ailing political careers and actualize their political ambitions.

* Anumudu

For instance Dr. Alex Obi seems to be fed up with the PDP he once served as State Chairman as the influx of political buccaneers in the PDP had unsettled him. Charlie Onyeagbako, another PDP chieftain lost out in the PDP  governorship primary in 2015.  Hon. Uche Onyeagocha’s case is a double barrel one. It was APGA that took him to the House of Representatives before he leapfrogged to the APC. He must have realized his political error and retraced his steps.

The latest to join the party is serial governorship aspirant, Humphrey Anumudu. He was reported to have said he will stay in APGA for life. Anumudu really understood the psyche of his new APGA friends and that may be the reason he said so. He perhaps knows that every decampee to APGA is looked with so much suspicion considering the manner politicians used the party to realize their ambitions and dump it thereafter.

Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State provides a case study. He used APGA to climb to power in 2011, dumped it thereafter and later described it as a cultural organization! Anumudu like Okorocha had flirted with many political parties in past before settling for APGA much as they do not have the same political temperament.

* Charles Onyeagbako

APGA in Imo state should put an end to the menace where politicians use it as a ladder to climb to power and dump it later. It is therefore interesting to hear the State Chairman, Peter Ezeobi say the party has learnt from its past mistakes and will therefore compel its aspirants to sign a legal document before the Party’s Primary.

This is a welcome development only if the party leadership in the State will not be overwhelmed by the political sophistry of these political titans and new entrants who are well versed in political sweet words. We are watching.
