The Majority Leader, Imo State House of Assembly Hon.Lugard Osuji has resigned.
He announced his resignation on his facebook wall Tuesday afternoon.
In a chat with this online newspaper shortly after his resignation, he confirmed he has quit his position which he did in the interest of peace of the Assembly.
Meanwhile, details have surfaced why the Majority Leader quit his position which has elicited mixed reactions from stakeholders across the State.
Ominous signs that all is not well in the Assembly emerged when the scheduled House plenary did not hold at the normal time of 10am on Tuesday as armed policemen took over the entire premises of the Assembly complex.
None of the lawmakers were also sighted in their offices as the entire complex looked like a deserted place as at 12pm.
An Assembly source claimed that the House members were at the Speaker’s lodge for discussions. This could not be verified as at press time.
Hon.Osuji it was gathered was in the eye of the storm after he moved a motion for the impeachment of the Clerk of the House, Chris Duru.
His motion was backed by 24 members of the House.
In a surprise move, the Speaker, Rt Acho Ihim announced the reversal of the suspension and set up a 5 man committee to investigate the activities of the Clerk.
Osuji this online newspaper gathered became a victim of hi wire intrigues, blackmail and politics that crept in among the lawmakers after House members refused to show up for the 2018 budget presentation by Governor Rochas Okorocha.
The members had wanted the Governor to give account of the Bail out funds and non availability of their Constituency votes. The Majority Leader was said to have lead the move which was initially supported by his colleagues.
Governor Okorocha was said to have issued threats to some of the lawmakers vowing not to issue them return tickets to the Assembly in 2019.
This was said to have sent panic among some of the lawmakers who resorted to make a u turn. This led to series of meetings among the House members.
According to a source,two options were said to have been given to the Majority Leader and other principal oficers- impeachment or resignation of which they choose the latter.
A top level government official was said to have intervened to save the House Leader all to no avail.
