In a statement in Owerri  signed by its President General, Emmanuel Okwu,  the ICA said it is worrisome that more than a year to the general elections in the State and in the country, less attention is given to issues pertaining to governance and the welfare of the people while the level of politicking orchestrated by politicians has accentuated to an unprecedented level since the Independent National Electoral Commission,  INEC released guidelines for the conduct of the next elections.

The ICA said since INEC released its time table, little attention is devoted to governance as it affects the people as politicians including public office holders have pre- occupied their schedule and time with political activities.

“We have observed that public office holders have abdicated their responsibilities ignoring issues bordering on governance for which they were elected and have rather chosen to engage more in politicking which will take place a year from now”

“We have also noted that because of this development, issues affecting the people have gotten less attention as public office holders concentrate more on politics than governance for which they were elected” the ICA said.

It added that in Imo State, the scenario is disturbing as governance seem to have come to a halt because those saddled with the responsibility to govern have devoted more of their time on politics rather than governance.

“Governance is at its lowest ebb. The people hear less of what government programmes are rather what we hear are political ambitions and altercations by politicians. Though we know politicians start early enough to prepare for electioneering, the intensity of politicking has become so intense that one begins to wonder if the elections are coming up within few days”

“Public office holders aspiring for elective offices should remember that they were elected for a four years tenure and  nothing less than that” the ICA stated.
