In response to rising bank robbery around the federation, Imo State Commissioner Of Police, Chris Ezike has said as a counter measure he has set up a crack squad to handle the situation.
According to the Commissioner, the outfit is christened “ Bank Chain Patrol Squad” and is headed by a Superintendent of Police.
The move is coming on the heels of the April 5 robbery attacks of some banks in Offa, Kwara State which resulted in the killing of an estimated 50 persons.
The CP maintained that the Command did not want to be caught unawares by criminal elements who now see the nation’s deposit banks as “ lucrative destination for deadly onslaughts”
Ezike said, “We don’t want what happened in Offa to happen here. We want to be pro-active than reactive.
“In Imo State, I have set up a squad known as bank chain patrol teams. They are made up of five teams. One squad led by a superintendent heads each of the teams.
“The squads move in chain. They don’t move separately. They begin by 8am and close by 4:30pm immediately the banks stop receiving customers.”
He called on bank managers to liase with the Squad to ensure that security breaches in the banks are dealt with.
