A bill for a law to abrogate the “Osu” caste system (law cap 1, ERN 26) of 1960 has passed second reading at the Imo State House of Assembly.

The bill went through second reading after lawmakers engaged in robust deliberations.
The bill is sponsored by Hon Nkenna Nzeruo who represents Oru East State constituency. Co sponsors are Ugonna Ozuruigbo, Ikechukwu Amuka, Kennedy Ibeh, Lugard Osuji, Uche Agabige, Donatus Onuigwe, Chika Madumere, Ifeanyi Nnataraonye, Ngozi Obiefule, and Uju Onwudiwe.
In his presentation, Hon Nzeruo said if the bill is passed into law, it would enhance a warm relationship in the family, group, organization, community and the society at large. He expressed regret over a situation where some persons are regarded as “less humans” because of “osu” caste system
In their contributions, Deputy Speaker, Hon Ugonna Ozuruigbo and the new Majority Leader, Hon Lugard Osuji kicked against the practice and condemned in strong terms the ill treatment meted on those classified as “osu”
After deliberations, the Speaker, Rt Hon Acho Ihim referred the matter to the Committee on Judiciary, who are mandated to report back to the House on Thursday, May 17, 2018
