Ahead of the 2019 governorship election in Imo State, the desire of some governorship aspirants and stakeholders in the All Progressive Grand Alliance, APGA in Imo State to produce a consensus candidate has been foreclosed.

APGA in Imo have the highest number of governorship aspirants. As at last week, the party had 20 governorship aspirants that have declared their ambition with Ziggy Azike the latest entrant.The high number of aspirants had raised concern as some stakeholders fear of an implosion in the party.

However, a source revealed to this newspaper that the party leadership in the State led by Barr Peter Ezeobi is bent on conducting free, fair and transparent governorship primaries that would produce a candidate acceptable to party members and to the people of Imo State.

Ezeobi reechoed the commitment of the party towards a free and fair primaries when speaking at the declaration of a legal practitioner, Ziggy Azike held at the State party secretariat in Owerri.

This newspaper gathered that some party stakeholders had expressed worry that some of the aspirants are moles of  who joined APGA on the guise of vying for the governorship ticket of the party just to cause disharmony and disaffection in the party .

Last week, an Owerri based local taboid reported that some governorship aspirants in the party had endorsed a frontline governorship aspirant, Chief Okey Ezeh for the party’s guber ticket.

This was refuted by a top official of the party while Mr.Eze in a statement echoed his firm belief in the power of internal democracy
