Some members of the Imo State House of Assembly are kicking against a proposal by the Executives to substitute the use of electoral wards with communities.
The Executives had forwarded an amendment to the legislature seeking to change the pattern of local government elections in Imo State. Hardly had the Majority leader of the House, Hon Lugard Osuji presented the bill during plenary did it it receive opposition from some lawmakers.
Some of the members of the House who spoke against the bill include Uche Ogwuike (Ikeduru), Donatus Onuigwe (Oru West), Bruno Ukoha (Ezinihitte Mbaise) and Ngozi Obiefule( Isu). They opposed the idea with various reasons citing its bogus nature as a major impediment.Hon Onuigwe specifically demanded for the contents of the bill to enable House members inform their constituents.
Hon Bruno Iwuoha harped on the funding of the exercise which he said will be a huge burden on the lean resources of the State.
The Bill had attracted the divided attention of many Imolites who see it as a political instrument to shore up the support base of the Rescue Mission government as the 2019 elections draws near in the face of growing and rising opposition in the State.
There are about 600 autonomous communities and 305 wards in Imo State.
