Hon. Obinna Mbata is an enigma, an exceptional character and a perfect gentleman.
He represents one of the emerging leaders of contemporary Imo politics. Not a core politician, he is a reflection of new generation of leaders who understands and sees politics as a platform to bequeath good governance that will lead to the well being of the people.
An encounter with the Amawom born Owerri Municipal banker and lawyer reveals a man with amiable mien, humble, humane and soft spoken with sharp eye for details on any issue. This could be attributed to his training as a banker, lawyer and a humble family background.
Mbata is an interviewer’s delight. He radiates so much confidence, calm and a good communicator who knows how to convey his views. No air of arrogance or display of insensitivity that usually goes with public office holders.
Obinna Mbata is the candidate of the All Progressive Congress, APC for Owerri Federal Constituency.
His debut into politics has been dramatic.Infact fate had played a fast one on him. He had declared his intention to run for Owerri Municipal State Constituency but was compelled to drop the bid and seek for a higher position by Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha who upped his ambition to Owerri Federal House of Representatives seat.
A sign of immense confidence and trust reposed in him by his mentor, Mbata was found worthy for Owerri Federal Reps Seat by his boss and mentor after showing and displaying an overdose of competence and capacity as Imo State Commissioner of Finance.
He first held sway as Commissioner of Internal Resources and Pension Matters where he came up with massive pension reforms before he landed the job to manage the finances of the State. Mbata holds the enviable record of the longest serving Imo State Commissioner of Finance surving more than three Cabinet reshuffles!
At a time Imo State was hit by nationwide economic recession, the State could not feel the “heat” because of his prudence in managing the finances of the State. His fine records at the Ministry led to his elevation as Interim Chairman,Forum of Finance Commissioners of Nigeria from October 2016 to January 2017.
At the Finance Ministry, he supervised and co-ordinated the activities and functions of the Ministry and the investment arm, Ministry of Finance Incorporated. He was also appointed Chairman, Imo Housing Committee where he among other things formulated a commercial Development framework for the State.
His banking experience spiced with his legal training can be defined as the pillar of his proficiency and effectiveness.
Before he was called upon to serve in Okorocha’s government, Mbata was the Regional Head, Legal Services, Northern Regional Legal office of the reputable Diamond bank where he supervised and co- ordinated the activities of Northern Regional legal office of the bank. He also facilitated the training and mentorship of bank staff on legal aspects of banking. In addition to this, he provided advice and opinions in policy formulation for the bank, ensured active participation in credit/loan review sessions and Business Performance Reviews among other landmark achievements.
Before he leaped into governance from the banking sector where he proved his mettle creditably, Mbata was appointed Board Member of Imo State Oil Minerals Development Commission, ISOPADEC where he among other things ensured effective organizational planning and management of resources.
As State Development Liaison Officer for Owerri Municipal Council, SDC, he meticulously ensured effective execution of development activities in the 11 political wards. He also co- ordinated the activities of all other SDC ward co- coordinators in Owerri municipal.
His sterling performances and the effective manner he discharged his responsibilities assigned to him are cumulative factors which led Governor Okorocha to consider him above a mere House of Assembly seat for the hallowed and Green Chambers of Nigeria’s House of Representatives.
Mbata is expected to emerge victorious in the polls and his victory will indeed signpost a new beginning for the good people of Owerri Federal Constituency who are craving not just for a loud voice but a voice of reason that will yield to dividends of democracy for them.
He has promised not just effective representation for his people but quality representation that will leave an indelible mark on the sands of time.
