Inability to reduce their number and adopt three aspirants amongst them  were some of the key reasons why governorship aspirants in Owerri zone in the All Progressive Grand Alliance, APGA failed to pick the party’s guber ticket.

Senator Ifeanyi Araraume form Okigwe zone eventually clinched the ticket.

More than 10 governorship aspirants from Owerri joined the race for the governorship ticket of APGA in Imo State.

Most of them were propelled by the relentless agitation for Owerri zone to produce the next Governor of Imo State in 2019.The last time the zone produced a State Governor was in 1992 and since the advent of democracy in Nigeria in  1999, the zone has not produced a Governor.

APGA has been in turbulence after its controversial primary which produced Senator Ifeanyi Araraume as the candidate on October 6.

The aggrieved aspirants have gone to court to challenged the outcome of the primary. Some of them have already joined other political platforms to further their ambition while accusing the State and national leadership of the party of betraying the confidence reposed in them.

Among those who have left the party include former Governor Ikedi Ohakim who has joined Accord Party, Barr.Humphrey Anumudu (Zenith Labour Party), Okey Ezeh (SDP) .

Ohakim is from Okigwe zone.

Efforts to get the party glued together before the governorship election has been ongoing following the efforts by Reconciliation Commitee and a chieftain of the party, Chief Jerry Chukwueke.

Chukwueke was reported in the media to have said that prior to the primaries the party leadership had advised aspirants from the zone to reduce their number and come up with three persons. He said the appeal was in futility.
