The governorship election in Imo State is on March 9th 2019. The Presidential and National Assembly elections may not necessarily have an impact on the governorship elections in the State
In Owerri zone, a region agitating for the governorship for a long time, key governorship aspirants from the zone are good to get considerable votes thus set to give big time candidates a run for their votes in the zone.
They are the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP governorship candidate, Emeka Ihedioha, United Progressive Party, UPP governorship candidate, Tony Nwulu and Mr. Okey Ezeh of the Social Democratic Party, SDP. The trio are from Mbaise, one of the largest clans in the State with a large voting population in Imo State
Ihedioha has been on the trail for long making his second come back to the governorship contest within four years. He relies on the strength of his party structure to succeed. But his stronghold in the zone is sharply threatened with the rising and meteoric rise of Hon Tony Nwulu, the UPP governorship candidate whose recent ongoing campaigns seem to have shaped and changed the political equation in the zone.
Analysts also say Okey Ezeh, the Social Democratic Party, SDP governorship candidate is another contender to watch out from Owerri zone. Since he left the All progressive Grand Alliance, APGA after its controversial primaries, Ezeh has surged on in pace and strength. His campaigns have been impressive and seems to have gained some foothold in the zone, thus piling pressure on other governorship candidates.
However, this has raised concern if the votes will not split in the zone as it is evidently clear that the trio of Ihedioha, Nwulu and Ezeh enjoy the son of the soil factor.
However, one cannot ignore the impressive in road made by the Action Alliance, AA governorship candidate, Uche Nwosu, APC governorship candidate, Senator Hope Uzodinma and APGA governorship candidate, Senator Ifeanyi Araraume. Thy are not from Owerri zone but are relying strongly on the strength of their respective parties which is visible in the zone.
Nwosu and Uzodinma hail from Orlu zone, while Araraume comes from Okigwe zone. The structures they have on ground in the zone and across the State will certainly fetch them good votes. In otherwords, they have strong foothold in Owerri zone and can never be wished away.
The agitation for Owerri zone to produce the next Governor of Imo State will be a big factor that will determine how the zone will vote in the upcoming governorship election.
An “uncertain political ground” but a key deciding factor that will shape the outcome of the polls.
