60% of voters in Imo State are undecided on whom to cast their vote in the forthcoming governorship election in the State. This is according to a report conducted by a political study group, Imo Awareness Coalition, IAC.

The group had predicted last year that the governorship election in Imo State will be keenly contested for and there will no clear winner at the first ballot.

According to the report endorsed by IAC President, Emmanuel Okwu, the multiplicity of governorship candidates in the State has made it difficult for voters to make a choice barely three weeks to the polls.

It said most of the candidates are only enjoying support from party members and loyalists, leaving a greater percentage of the electorate with PVCs to remain undecided on whom to vote for.

It also attributed this development to the tense political situation in the State and intra party squabbles in some of the major political parties.

“We have observed that there may be voter apathy. Most of the candidates support base is coming from members of their political parties not really from the voting population, a substantial number who have opted to watch with keen interest unfolding political developments as the elections draws near.

According to the IAC, none of the candidates have been able to inject “the required massive acceptance and followership for their aspiration. This makes the contest a tough one and too close to call. Mood of the electorate which is subject to swings, perception and rating of the candidates will be huge determinant factors that will eventually decide who wins the polls

It also stated that the recent statement made by President Muhammadu Buhari at the rally of the All Progressive Congress, APC held at the Dan Anyiam stadium, Owerri, that voters should vote for candidates of their choice across party lines has further made voters in the State to remain undecided on which of the candidates will get their vote.
