Reports say there is a major division in the National Executive Council (NEC ) of the governing All Progressive Congress, APC over the likely expulsion of Governors Rochas Okorocha of Imo State and his Ogun State counterpart, Ibikunle Amosun.
The duo were suspended by the National Working Committee, NWC led by Comrade Adams Oshiomole, the party’s National Chairman on alleged anti party activities.
In taking that decision, the two governors were accused of working against the interest of the party by supporting candidates of other political parties during the just concluded governorship elections.
Okorocha had backed his son in law, Uche Nwosu, while Amosun supported Adekunle Akinlade, a serving member of the House of Representatives.
When Nwosu and Akinlade did not the APC governorship tickets, they defected to the Action Alliance, AA and the Allied Peoples Movement, APM.
While Nwosu lost to Emeka Ihedioha of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Akinlade lost to Dapo Abiodun, the APC candidate.
A Nigerian daily newspaper quoted an unnamed source in the party to have said that expelling the two Governors from the party will generate a stormy session when the NEC meets to deliberate further on the issue.
The NEC consists of party leaders, former and serving governors, and other stakeholders of the party. They are said to be divided on the matter.
According to the source, some of the governors should be suspended for not being remorseful after the embarrassment caused the party and President Buhari, others felt the suspension slammed on them and the defeat they suffered during the elections, after their anointed candidates lost, is enough.
“The issue will be tabled at the next NEC meeting of the party and we expect it to be a stormy session because majority of the stakeholders are divided on whether further actions should be taken against those who are already serving suspension,” he said.
