Orlu zone will produce the next Speaker of the 9th incoming State House of Assembly.
A special investigation conducted by this newspaper reveals that the incoming administration is favorably disposed to have a Speaker from the zone despite strong protestations made by Okigwe zone that see it as their right since the Governor elect and Deputy Governor elect comes from Owerri and Orlu zones.
The emergence of a Speaker of the next House of Assembly had been a turbulent issue since Hon. Emeka Ihedioha emerged the Governor elect of Imo State.
By equity and fairplay, Okigwe zone is due for the Speakership but the inability of the six local governments that make up the zone to vote for the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP during the governorship and State Assembly elections is making it a herculean task.
The opposition political parties, the Action Alliance, AA and the All Progressive Grand Alliance, APGA, swept the Assembly seats in the zone.
In Nigeria, Speakers of State Assembles are influenced by the Executives who need a “friendly Speaker” to moderate a “Friendly” House of Assembly to enable the executives have a synergy with the legislature.
As at the time of filing this report, contenders for the Speakership of the House expected to be inaugurated in June, have been narrowed down to one or two House members elect from Orlu zone.
