New Look Eke Ukwu Owerri Market Underway

by admin

The Eke Ekeukwu market Owerri is on the verge of repair as the State Government has begun the process of rebuilding it.

The market was demolished by Governor Rochas Okorocha in September 2017.

The demolition attracted widespread condemnation and public outcry leading to the untimely death of 10 year old Somtochukwu Ibeanusi who died during a protest by Owerri youths who stood against the demolition of the market.

The present administration of Governor Emeka Ihedioha on assumption of office promised to rebuild the ancestral market held so dear by the people of the State.

This newspaper had reported last week that an ultra modern market will be built on the same location the old Eke Ukwu stood.

A special Commitee known as Imo State Market Development Commitee set up by the State Government has called for expression of Interest from those interested in rebuilding the market.

It has called for the services of Building Design Consultants to bid for the rebuilding of the market, urging those interested to apply to the Commitee within a specified time frame.

It is unknown what will be the fate of an existing structure at the market which was hurriedly put up by the Okorocha administration after the market was brought down to rubbles.
