Pope Francis on Sunday said he was stuck in an elevator for 25 minutes and was freed by firefighters.

The pontiff arrived late for the weekly address in St Peter’s Square on Sunday

“I have to beg your pardon” the smiling pontiff said as he read his address about 10 minutes late, according to Reuters.

He explained that there had been an electrical power problem in the Vatican and he was stuck in the elevator until he was freed by Vatican fire fighters.

” A round of applause for the fire brigade” he told the crowd.
