Since he assumed office as Interim Management Committee Chairman of Owerri Municipal Council, Hon.Ebere Chukwemeka, ABJ, has done well to the amazement of well meaning Owerri Indigenes and non Indigenes. He has also successfully aligned the municipality into the Rebuild Imo project of Governor Emeka Ihedioha.
Hon. Ebere Chukwemeka, fondly called ABJ, has performed above expectations barely few months in office.He has taken Owerri Municipal to the next level and many stakeholders in the municipality, attest to his impressive performance within a short time as Chairman of the Interim management Council.
Like a golden fish that has no hiding place, ABJ has proved his mettle and has made Owerri Municipal to tower above other local governments, in terms of performance, and delivery of dividends of democracy.
On assumption of office, ABJ signalled his intention to run an inclusive administration at the Council by engaging key stakeholders in Owerri Municipal made up of Nde Oha( elders), the youths, the women, where they pledged their support to him, and to the Rebuild Imo Project of Governor Ihedioha.
Thereafter, he hit the ground running by embarking on key projects which include ; rehabilitation of Owerri Municipal Council headquarters, which is now wearing a new look.
Part of the renovation at the Council headquarters is the upgrade of the administrative block to a befitting status, re- grassing of the Council premises to give it a serene look to make the environment conducive for workers to discharge their duties, asphalting of pathways in the Council and ensuring a clean environment, in line with the Go Green Stay clean policy of the Ihedioha administration.
As a lover of the youths and sports development, ABJ introduced the Oru Owerre unity cup, a football competition, youths of the five villages in Owerri actively participated.Cash and other reward prizes were given out not only to the winners of the competition, but all teams that participated in the football event.
He also embarked on the construction of a stadia at the Old Stadium ground in line with the policy of the Ihedioha administration which has embarked on construction of a stadia in each of the 27 local governments.
ABJ also ensured the introduction of Clock in Clock Out system at the Council headquarters, which has fished out ghost workers, restored discipline among staff and reduced the huge monthly wage bill of the Council.
He had also embarked on pensions verification exercise, which yeilded positive results, as pensioners in Owerri Municipal, were paid their pensions after many years of neglect by past administrations.
To tackle the increasing rate of power outage within the municipality, ABJ took proactive steps, by facilitating the provision and installation of a 500 KVA transformer, fully energized at Tetlow/School road, Owerri, which has put to an end the perennial power problems in the area.
According to the Chairman, more transformers will also be distributed to other communities in Owerri and environs, such as Assumpta and World Bank areas that have been in perennial darkness for long due to power failure.
Security of lives and property in Owerri Municipality also received the immediate attention of the Chairman when he assumed office four months ago.
At a time Douglas road and other adjoining streets Owerri became a den of criminals who perpetuated criminality, ABJ swiftly moved into action and constituted Owerri Municipal Security Guards to checkmate the rate of criminallity in the area.
His efforts were corroborated by Governor Emeka Ihedioha who donated two buses to aid the operations of the Security outfit. This has led to reduction in crime in Owerri Municipal as residents of Owerri, now walk the streets freely and sleep at night with their two eyes closed.
Women in Owerri Municipal have not been left out as ABJ and the Council First Lady, Mrs.Chukwemeka, during the 2019 August meeting, empowered several women with cash and other gift items.
He has also in synergy, with the Task Force on street trading restored sanity at Douglas road, Owerri and other major roads in the Municipal.
These impressive achievements of Hon.Ebere Chukwemeka,ABJ are indeed commendable, and he deserves to be supported to continue the good works at Owerri Municipal Council for a longer period.
