The South East Youth Assembly, SEYA, has listed the qualities a Nigerian President of Igbo extraction must possess as the race for the 2023 Presidency gradually begins.
SEYA in a statement in Enugu said “the Igbo must bring forth a President acceptable to the North, a friend of the South West, an ally of the South South and in all, one committed to the indivisibility and unity of Nigeria”
The statement signed by Cornel Ihejirika and Donald Amadi, Chairman and Secretary of SEYA respectively, they stated that based on a recent survey it conducted, there is no section of the country that is not receptive to an Igbo emerging as Nigeria’s President.
“Igbos live in every part of the country.This shows how we are all accepted.
“For the North and others to support a Nigerian President of Igbo extraction, we must rally round someone without skeletons in his cupboard, one without a corrupt record. One with little or no political baggages. One irrevocably commiteed to Nigeria’s unity.
“President Buhari has set a high standard for anyone that wants to take over from him in 2023.
“Mr.President has shown his zero tolerance for corruption. So we must get someone from Igboland that is not corrupt.
“Also we must look beyond personalising the idea. We cannot produce a President for this country single handely. Igbo need the support of almost all the geo political zones in the country. We must assimilate this fact.
“The leadership of Ohaneze Ndi Igbo has a role to play. They must begin the sensitisation now and reach out to other notable leaders and groups in the country and speak on why Igbos must produce the next President of Nigeria when Buhari’s tenure ends in 2023.
“The support we are getting thus far for the project is indeed encouraging. But we must walk the talk. We must engage each other.
“We cannot begin a merry go round affair by allowing every dick, tom and Harry from Igboland to join the race when the time comes.
“We must come out strong, and united for the contest. And we must do our best.
