Owerri Municipal Chairman, Ebere Blows Hot On Street Traders

For the last time after several appeals to some traders to desist from trading on the streets especially at Douglas Road, Owerri, the Chairman, Interim Management Committee, IMC, Owerri Municipal, Hon. Ebere Chukwuemeka, has said Government will no longer tolerate such acts.

Speaking to newsmen in Owerri, he said street trading would no longer be accepted by the government anymore saying several warnings have been issued to them to desist from such illegality.

He said “Government has done enough sensitization programmes appealing to the traders to desist from trading on the streets.

“But we will no longer allow street trading particularly on a major road like Douglas Road. The festive period is over and we will no longer allow the traders who trade on the streets to continue to cause hitches to the free flow of traffic in the municipality.

“As a government that has a human face, we have done enough to sensitize them. We have spoken to them, we have appealed them. We call on them to join hands with both the State and local governments to join us in the task of rebuilding the State.

He continued “ From Monday, 13th January, 2019, anyone caught trading on Douglas Road will be dealth with in accordance with the law.

“ People should learn to be law abiding. Those who trade on the streets should go to places designated for them to carry out their trade” he advised
