With the funeral of Senator Benjamin Uwajumuogu over, the race for Okigwe Senate seat (Imo North), has been blown open.
The late Senator was buried at Ihitte Uboma Local Government Area of Imo State on Friday, 22nd February
Before his funeral, there were reports that some chieftains of the All Progressive Congress, APC and the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, from the area interested in the post, were holding consulations.
Within the APC, it was speculated that Minister of State for Education, Hon.Emeka Nwajiuba, may run for the position.
Close political associates to the Minister were unable to confirm or dispel the speculation.
“Is there anything wrong if he decides to contest for Okigwe Senate seat. Is he not eminently qualified” said one of his associates who spoke on condition of anonymity.
Serial governorship contender, Senator Ifeanyi Araraume is alleged to be drafting his son, Godwin Araraume into the contest
Former Governor Ikedi Ohakim is another top shot said to be eying the Senate seat. But analyst contend that his declaration for the position could be dependent on some factors.
There are also specualations that Mr.Chikwem Onuoha may also be interested in the seat.
None of the likely contenders have opened up on their ambition ostensibly because the immediate past Senator was yet to be buried at that time.
The biggest speculation is the rumoured intention of wife of the late Senator, Mrs Chidinma Uwajumuogu to join the contest.
