The Imo Democratic Alliance, IDA, has backed calls by Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El Rufai, that the South should produce the next President of Nigeria after President Buhari’s tenure expires in 2023.

Governor El Rufai had on Monday insisted that the North has no justification to remain in power after the expiration of Buhari’s second tenure, stating that the Presidency should rightly return to Southern Nigeria.

El Rufai had said though the Constitution of the APC does not make provision for rotation but in the interest of justice, equity and fair play, Presidency should go to other regions of the country.

“The general political consensus in Nigeria is that the Presidency should rotate between the North and the South. It is not written but everyone understands it” he said.

Reacting to El Rufai’s comments in a telephone interview Monday, President of IDA, Kevin Anyanwu, said the Kaduna State Governor deserves accolade for speaking the truth as it concerns power shift in the country after Buhari’s tenure ends in 2023.

He said “We, the IDA, commend Governor El Rufai for saying the raw truth. For fairness and equity, power should shift to the South, the South East in particular, a zone since the return of democracy in 1999, has not produced Nigeria’s President.

“In the South, it is the South West and the South South that had produced Presidents. Obasanjo From the South West was President for eight years, and Jonathan for the South South was President for six years. It is only the South East that has not produced a President

“It flows naturally that the zone should be given the opportunity to produce a President for this country in 2023

He said the All Progressive Congress APC at the moment offers the right platform for the South East to produce the next president of Nigeria.

“Power in this country resides with the APC for now.The South East should quickly align with the ruling party if we must succeed to producing Nigeria’s President” Mr.Anyanwu stated
