The ban on burials in Imo State by the State government as part of measures to contain the spread of coronavirus led to most mortuary facilities being filled to the brim with dead bodies.
Most mortuary operators in the State had lamented that since the ban was imposed, there were no more spaces in their mortuary facilities to acomodate the inflow of dead bodies.
This is worsened by the fact that most of the mortuary facilities in the State are in deplorable condition.
An operator of a popular mortuary facility in Owerri who spoke on condition of anonymity, revealed that the ban led to overflow of dead bodies in the mortuary he operates.
“It got a point we began to reject some of the dead bodies because our facility was filled up.
‘We made several complaints to the Governor on this issue. It has been difficult to cope with the high number of dead bodies during the Covid 19 lockdown’ he said
However, Governor Hope Uzodinma at a news conference in Owerri on Friday, admitted that he was under pressure from mortuary operators in the State to lift the ban on Burials because their facilities were filled up.
He approved a period of two weeks for relatives of the dead ones to bury them with strict procedures among which include no burial ceremonies after burial
