The race for Okigwe senate seat has continued to generate interests even beyond the senatorial zone.

Since the death of Senator Benjamin Uwajumuogu, who had represented the zone in the senate until his untimely death, the race for his replacement has taken different turns and twists.

The latest unfolding intrigues ahead of the contest, is the reported endorsement of the candidature of Mr. Cosmas Iwu, current Secretary to the Imo State government, by Governor Hope Uzodinma.

Iwu is the younger sibling of former Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Prof Maurice Iwu. The latter currently heads the Covid 19 Prevention Committee in the State.

The reported and alleged endorsement of the younger Iwu by the Governor, has stirred worries in the camp of those jostling for the contest, moreso when Government House, Owerri is yet to officially distance itself from the report claiming Uzodinma’s endorsement for Mr. Iwu.

This newspaper had reported last month that Governor Uzodinma may back a “dark horse” in the race, outside the litany of current aspirants eying the seat.

Political analysts contend that Governor Uzodinma remains a big and determinant factor in the race for Okigwe Senate seat, irrespective of the fact he is not from the zone.Whoever he backs in the contest has an edge over other contenders in the race because of incumbency factor.

However, more than 25 aspirants have indicated interest in the race and have showed commitment to emerge  victorious.

The front-line aspirants include Senator Ifeanyi Araraume, Former Speaker, Imo State House of Assembly, Hon. Acho Ihim, Hon. Mathew Omegara, Prof Nnamdi Obiareri, Senator Athan Achonu, Chidinma Uwajumuogu and others.
