There are fears that the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in Imo State, risks losing some of its key members including those holding public office with the party’s mandate.
Majority of its members in the State House of Assembly had decamped to the All Progressive Congress, APC when the Supreme Court sacked Emeka Ihedioha as Governor of Imo State and replaced him with Senator Hope Uzodinma of the APC.
Some of the federal lawmakers elected on the platform of the party have been speculated to making secret moves to leave the party.
Hon. Henry Nwawuba, member representing Mbaitoli/Ikeduru federal constituency, was among some of the lawmakers fingered to be making such plans to leave the party.
He however denied the allegation. In a statement in Owerri, he said “I have remained and shall remain a stalwart of the PDP even if I become the last man standing. Even in the challenging time of the Supreme Court’s withdrawal of our mandate, I have remained totally loyal to the leaders and structures of our Party in Imo State.
However, the State Publicity Secretary, Mr. Damian Opara, has thrown in the towel resigning his position as member of the State Exco. In a letter circulated on the social media, the State Secretary of the party, Ray Emeana, acknowledged a letter of resignation from Mr. Opara.
The state Chairman of the party, Charlie Ezekwem had also resigned in January 2020, at a period the party was in court seeking for a review of the judgment which removed Emeka Ihedioha as Governor of Imo State.
A source in the party said the resignation of some party executive members will not affect the party as state congresses will afford the opportunity to replace them with new party officers.
