The Committee on verification of staff and salaries of the Unified local Government Councils in Imo State, have made shocking revelations on the state workforce.
Submitting its report to Governor Hope Uzodinma, at the Exco Chambers, Govt House, Owerri, Wednesday, Chairman of the Committee, Mrs.Rosemary Izuogu, said her committee made shocking and ugly discoveries such as salary padding, noting that in a particular Local Government Area in the State, salaries were padded to the tune of N9 million naira and double salaries were paid to some workers.
She said some hydra- headed problems were discovered in the process of verification, including the existence of a syndicate and cabals which exists for a long time.
According to her, some workers who are still working ought to have retired, pointing out that so much resources have been wasted on those who are not workers but who come to ask for salaries.
Governor Hope Uzodinma, while receiving the report, lamented that 85 percent of local government funds are expended on payment of salaries, which affects the development at the Councils.
He vowed that “government will drop as many as possible on the local government payroll that are not working for government.”
He warned that henceforth no worker in the state will receive double salaries , insisting that sanity will be restored in the system.
