‘We Have Money To Pay Pensioners,Workers’-Imo Govt Opens Up

The Imo State government says it has the funds to pay pensioners their pensions and also workers salaries.

The state government cleared the air after speculations became rife that paucity of funds may be affecting it from paying workers salaries and pensioners, their pensions.

Pensioners had gone on protests in the State capital, Owerri, Monday to press home their demand for their pensions, the second in less than a week. They issued a fresh ultimatum to Governor Hope Uzodinma, to comply within seven days or face mass protests.

Imo State Commissioner of Finance, Mr. Chucks Chukwuemeka, however said Imo State is buoyant enough to pay pensions and salaries.

Giving reasons for the delay in payments, he blamed some Heads of parastatals for non compliance which led to the delay, stating that there is money for the state government to pay.

Chukwuemeka said some of the Heads of Parastals in the State failed to adhere to new measures introduced by the state government which led to non payment of workers in their various agencies and parastatals.

On delay in paying the pensioners, he said the state government is not resting on its oars, assuring that soon eligible pensioners will be paid.
