The Imo Awareness Coalition, a watchdog group in the state, has said “it is deeply concerned over reports that a particular member of the Imo State House of Assembly flung bottles at a female colleague at a meeting of Imo Assembly lawmakers”
Fidelis Echendu, spokesman of the Coalition, in a statement in Owerri, said such reports are “disturbing and portrays the State Assembly, which should be made up of honourable men and women, as nest of touts and people of unruly behavior”
Newspaper reports in Owerri had claimed that the member representing Ahiazu Mbaise State Constituency in the State House of Assembly, Hon. Samuel Otuibie, had allegedly flung a wine bottle at a female colleague recently.
The report stated that the event took place at a caucus meeting of the All Progressive Congress, APC members in the House convened by the Speaker, Chiji Collins.
The IAC statement stated “That if such reports are true, then it is not only disturbing but worrisome. Though we understand that men and women of the legislature all over the world disagree to agree, the resort to violence by a member of the House on a female colleague leaves a sour taste in the mouth, and is totally unacceptable.
“It sends wrong signals about the House and its members. There are better ways to express views and opinions rather than resort to violence by flinging harmful objects at each other.
“ Our Honourable members should note that they represent over three million Imolites whom they carry their mandate. They should be conscious of this mandate at all times, and conduct themselves in honourable ways in representing their constituents.
