9th Senate: Imo Senators Not Among Top Ten Bill Sponsors

Senators representing Imo State in the Senate were found wanting among senators who have sponsored 10 bills or more in the Red Chambers.

When the 9th National Assembly was inaugurated in June 2019, Imo State had three senators.

They are: Senator Ezenwa Onyewuchi representing Imo East Senatorial zone, Senator Benjamin Uwajumuogu (Imo North senatorial zone) and Senator Rochas Okorocha (Imo West senatorial zone).

Senator Onyewuchi is of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, while former Governor of Imo State, Senator Okorocha is of the All Progressive Congress, APC.

Senator Uwajumuogu, also of the APC, died in December 2019.

None of them have sponsored up to 10 bills in the Red chambers since they were sworn in June, 2019. Rather senators, mainly female from neighbouring  Anambra State do have more bills to their credit.

Top on the list is Senator Stella Oduah, a two time senator who has to her credit 29 bills.

Some of the bills are Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Bill, Protection of Personal Information Bill, Private Hospital Regulation Bill, the Marriage Act (Repeal and Re-enactment) Bill, Marital Right of Spouses Bill, Investment Assurances Bill, among others.

Another female senator, Uche Ekwunife, has sponsored 17 bills on the floor of the senate.  They include Public Procurement Act 2007 (Amendment) Bill, Penal Code Act Cap 53 (Abuja) LFN, Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill, Nigerian Investment Promotion Commission Act (Amendment) Bill, National Broadcasting Commission Act (Amendment) Bill, among others.

Senator Ifeanyi Ubah also from Anambra State do have 13 bills to his name. Some of the Bills include the Deep Offshore and Inland Basin Production Sharing Contract Act which has been signed into law.

According to a report seen by INNONEWS, Deputy Senate President, Omo Ovie Agege, another two term senator, has sponsored over 20 Bills though mainly Constitution Alteration Bills.

Observers however say that the Senators who surpassed the 10 bills mark are mainly two term Senators.

Senators Ezenwa Onyewuchi and Rochas Okorocha are first time senators in the Senate. They have however sponsored some bills.

Surprisingly, Senate President, Ahmed Lawan is among few senators in the Red Chambers who have no single bill which originated from them.
