Local Government election will take place in Abia State on December 19, 2020.

This was revealed by Chairman, Abia State Independent Electoral Commission, ABSIEC, Prof Mkpa Agu Mkpa, at a meeting with leaders of registered political parties in the State held at the Micheal Okpara Auditorium, Umuahia.

He advised political parties to ensure they screen the certificates of all the aspirants. According to him, aspirants should be able to meet the minimum qualification of a secondary school certificate before submitting their names to the commission.

The election is expected to take place in the 17 local governments and 292 wards of the state for the posts of Chairmen and ward councilors.

He also advised the party leaders to ensure that the prevailing relevant COVID-19 protocols are observed throughout the period leading to the polls.

He also assured that the Commission on it’s part will ensure that the polls comply with COVID-19 safety protocols.

Also speaking, the State Chairman of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Rt Hon. Asiforo Okere, thanked ABSIEC for coming up with a time table for the election.
