• The Union disowned the group which set up a parallel exco

The Imo State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Imo state chapter, is still intact.

This was disclosed in a statement signed by the Chairman and Secretary of the Union, Chris Akaraonye and Juliet Dim, respectively.

The statement came after a splinter group formed a new exco.

The full statement reads:

‘It has come to the knowledge of Imo Council of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) of a fake group purporting to have set up a caretaker committee for Imo NUJ.

‘The general public should please  disregard any of such so called kangaroo caretaker Committee by charlatans whose membership of the union are questionable.

‘For the avoidance of doubt, the leadership of NUJ in Imo State is very much intact with the State Working Committee (SWC) headed by Chief Chris Akaraonye (chairman) and Comrade Juliet Dim (secretary).

‘The group of renegades, who invaded the old secretariat of the Council at Port Harcourt Road Owerri to stage the charade are on illegal mission.

‘It’s act of mischief for anybody or group to make any reference to Amby Uneze and Lambert Ojukwu as though they constitute any iota of legitimacy with regard to NUJ in Imo state.

‘Its a well known fact that Amby Uneze and Lambert Ojukwu went to court over the NUJ election in the state which they lost, and the court case comes up by 24th Nov  2020.

‘It would also be recalled that the NUJ, Imo State Council, slammed an indefinite suspension on two of her Associate members, Mr. Lambert Ojukwu and Amby Uneze, for anti-union activities.

‘The dramatic and laughable announcement of setting up of a caretaker committee and purported setting aside of an Imo elected executive by Lambert Ojukwu and Amby Uneze group should be ignored, as it was and exercise in futility. NUJ is a disciplined organisation with laid down rules and regulation.

‘The security agencies in the state have been briefed on this attempt to cause breach of peace.

‘The National Secretariat and the Zonal office of NUJ have also been briefed on the activities of this dissident group, as we await further disciplinary action against them.

‘We therefore call on the good people of Imo State and colleagues to disregard this act.
