Ohaneze Presidency: Consensus Candidate On The Radar

As the January 7, 2020 Ohaneze Ndi Igbo Presidential election comes close, there are moves to get a consensus candidate among aspirants jostling for the position from Imo State.

Imo State is due to produce the next leader of apex pan Igbo socio political organization, after the expiration of the tenure of Dr. John Nwodo.

As part of the moves, an elder statesman, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, was said to convened a strategic meeting which had in attendance town unions, in Owerri, to possibly tinker ways of shopping for a consensus candidate from Imo State.

Decisions reached at the meeting could not be ascertained as at press time.

INNONEWS gathered that several groups have been holding meetings, to explore the possibility of shopping for a consensus candidate.

Top among the list as contenders for the Ohaneze Presidency job from Imo State include former Nigeria Ambassador to the United States, George Obiozor, former Inspector General of Police,Mike Okiro.

Former Secretary General of the organization, Dr.Jeo Nworgu, is said to be highly considered, considering the fact he knows the workings of the organization having served thrice as Chief scribe of the organization, and chaired strategic commitees within the group.

Last week, Mr. Chidi Osuagwu also joined the contest, swelling the number of aspirants from Imo State. Osuagwu received endorsements from some groups within and outside Igboland.

A source aware of the undercurrents shaping the dynamics leading to the election said ” The Ohaneze Ndigbo presidential election scheduled for January 7 is eliciting so much interests from various groups within and outside Igboland

“2023 is a crucial year for the Igbo nation, and we want to ensure that wide consultations are made to ensure we get the best person to take over from Nwodo. Yes, Imo State is to produce the next president, but it is the Igbo nation that will choose who will be leader of the group.

This newspaper learnt that part of modalities for the conduct of the election, include 30 man delegates to be drawn from each of the five States in the South East, and 10 states each from Rivers and Delta States.
