An Owerri based football enthusiast, Mr.Kelechi Osigwe, has said Super Eagles coach, Gernort Rohr, can re enact the Super Eagles of 1994 “if he can get his acts together and build a winning squad”
The Super Eagles team of 1994 won the Africa Cup of Nations in Tunisia and later that year, put up a splendid performance at the World Cup in the U.S.
The team was on the verge of progressing to the quarter final of the World Cup, until Roberto Baggio 88th minute equalizer and another goal in extra time sent the then Africa champions out of the tournament.
Osigwe said the recent form of most Nigerian players in Europe is encouraging and could serve as a propelling factor for the coach to build a formidable Super Eagles team, which could repeat the exploits of the squad of 1994.
“At the moment, most of our players are doing well for their various clubs in Europe. Name them,Wilfred Ndidi, Kelechi Iheanacho, Jeo Aribo, Paul Onuachu, Ola Aina, and many of them who are playing regularly for their various clubs.
“A good coach who knows his onion will translate the gains of these performances of these players for the good of the national team.
“I can say after a long while, this is the time we have a good number of our players playing so well at the same time for their various clubs abroad. If Rohr cannot put his acts together and ensure the national team benefits from this, then he has no business being Super Eagles coach.
“This is Rohr’s third year as Coach of the Super Eagles and there is nothing to show for it.
“Clemence Westerhof took the Super Eagles to the final of the Nations Cup in Algeria in 1990, barely a year after he was appointed head coach
“Four years later, he won the Nation’s Cup in Tunisia after winning Bronze at Senegal in 1992
“Westerhof had good players then and he built a memorable team for Nigerians with those set of players. Then, most of our players were playing well in Europe. We had abundant talents at the local league which he also used to beef up the national team
“It’s like history wants to repeat itself. Rohr has array of players now playing well for their clubs. It is almost the same scenario now and then
“If he knows his onion, he should take advantage of the impressive performances of our players, and glue them together as a team, and win laurels for the country, else he has no reason to remain as Super Eagles Coach” Osigwe concluded
