President Muhammadu Buhari seems to have raised the hopes of some members of the All Progressive Congress, APC, in Imo State, who are now finding solace in the President’s recent comments at the re-validation of his membership of the party.
President Buhari accompanied by 10 APC State Governors, including Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma, said in Daura, Katsina State, that henceforth no one seeking for elective position on the APC platform will be “anointed from Abuja”
Recall that the APC in some states was plagued by imposition of candidates, a development which contributed to excessive internal scuffles among party stakeholders and aspirants.
However, President Buhari in line with this resolve to introduce a new order in the party, emphasized on the need for those seeking public offices on the APC platform to focus on working hard and not to depend on “anointing from Abuja” to realize their ambitions.
INNONEWS gathered that some APC chieftains in the State are happy with the President for making such pronouncement which if faithfully implemented, will encourage healthy political competition in the party.
A chieftain of the APC in the State,Hon. Fidelis Nwachukwu, who spoke to this newspaper, said the President deserves kudos for declaring that aspirants seeking for public office in the party will no longer be anointed in Abuja.
Nwachukwu said this will strengthen internal democracy in the APC and henceforth, provide a level playing ground for all aspirants in the APC.
He recalled that the endless crisis rocking the APC in Imo State, can be attributed to the fact that some persons were anointed for certain positions, particularly for the governorship ticket of the party in 2019.
He said “The 2019 Imo APC governorship primary is a case study. We were all witnesses to how Ahmed Gulak manipulated the governorship primary to favour Senator Hope Uzodimma.
“The offshoot of that action is still causing chaos in Imo APC till today. Gulak was playing out a script prepared for him by then National Chairman of the APC, Comrade Adams Oshiomole who had adopted and anointed Uzodimma as governorship candidate of the APC in Imo State. This was against constitutional provision of conducting credible party primary devoid of “anointing or interest” from certain quarters” he said
