The Association of Imo State Indigenous Town Unions (AISITU), which is the umbrella body of all the Town Unions in Imo State, will on Saturday, February 27, 2021 elect new functionaries to steer the affairs of the group.

A statement issued by the chairman of the electoral committee, Chief Chris Chikwe, indicates that arrangements to ensure a smooth, credible and transparent election have been concluded.

His words, “We have put all measures in place to deliver a credible, free and fair election. The Town Union operates a timeless democratic system which respects collective decision-making. There cannot be democracy without transparent elections. This is the reason we have worked tirelessly to ensure that the forthcoming electoral exercise will be a reference point in the discourse of credible polls.

“The aspirants have all conducted themselves in line with our electoral rules. The cooperation and logistical support we have received from the outgoing leadership have further motivated us to work and justify the confidence reposed in us,” he said.

In adherence to the zoning formula of the Association, the position of President-General is open for contest between Okigwe and Owerri zones, and the contenders from the both zones have intensified their campaigns.

The Saturday’s election brings to an end the tenure of Chief Emeka Diwe as President-General of the Association. Beside the impetus which the Association has given to development, peace and security in Imo communities, the stewardship of Chief Diwe has repositioned the group to lead strong advocacy for good governance in Imo State. Similarly, the group has championed the Aku Ruo Ulo Investment Initiative, which aims at the repatriation of Igbo wealth back home with its attendant impact on development, job creation and social progress.
