‘Go Home, Jesus Has Risen’, Gunmen Tell Freed Inmates, Attack Correctional Facility, Police Hqtrs In Owerri

Unknown gunmen in the early hours of Easter Monday attacked Owerri Correctional Facility and the State Police Headquarters, located close to Government House, Owerri.

About 1, 500 inmates were reportedly freed by the gunmen at the Correctional facility. Reports on social media say that almost all the vehicles parked at the premises of the police headquarters were destroyed and those in police cells freed.

The gunmen, according to reports, sang solidarity songs at Government House roundabout for about 30 minutes about before attacking the facilities.

It was also learnt that on breaking into the prison facility with the aid of dangerous explosives, the gunmen told those they freed to “Go home, Jesus has risen. You have no reason to be here”.

The attacks came after the Imo State Commissioner of Police, Nasiru Mohammed said that he had deployed over 4760 personnel to ensure maximum security during and after the Easter celebration.

The Imo State Police Command, Owerri is yet to issue an official statement on the incident.The Police Spokesperson, Orlando Ikokwu could not be reached to confirm the incident
