The South East Coalition for Good Governance, SECG, has backed former President, Goodluck Jonathan, on his comments, that the ballots and not the judiciary should determine the winners of elections in Nigeria.

SECGC National President, Emmanuel Okwu told newsmen in Enugu, that the former President deserves accolades for saying so.

“We support the views expressed by former President Goodluck Jonathan, which clearly distinguish him as a true democrat.

“The indiscriminate manner election victory has been awarded to candidates by the judiciary makes nonsense of the electoral process. It pales elections into insignificance, but some politicians take advantage of it to go into public office without going through the ballot

“It clearly undermines the power of the voter who has the right to choose or reject those to govern him or her.

“Courts should only adjudicate on election issues such as allegations of election malpractices and if it finds the outcome of the polls questionable, it should order for fresh elections, and not to circumvent the choice of the people as expressed in the election

“ The power of the ballot should not be sacrificed for whatever reason” Okwu said.
