Why Sack Of Imo LG IMC Chairmen Is Delayed

BY RALPH EJIMKONYE

The 27 Interim Management Committees, which run the local governments in Imo State may remain in office for more period of time.

They will not leave office, after the conduct of congresses of the All Progressive Congress, APC in the State.

The APC national secretariat in Abuja, had last week, released dates for congresses to take place.

Governor Hope Uzodimma has been under pressure to sack the Interim Chairmen, whose appointments are believed to have elapsed.

The Chairmen have remained in office for over a year.

Their sack has been expected, after the Governor had sacked 20 of his Commissioners.

On June 4, 2021, he also sacked over 80 Special Advisers and Senior Special Assistants, SSAs.

Governor Uzodimma had promised to democratize the local governments by holding local government elections.

When the polls will hold is not certain, as the State Independent Electoral Commission, ISIEC, is not forthcoming with plans to organize the election.

Sources told INNONEWS, that the governor may have shelved the sack of the Chairmen, because of their roles in tackling insecurity in the State.

The level of insecurity in the State had taken a frightening dimension, when hoodlums carried out attacks on some Police Stations and offices of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, in some local governments in the State.

A source said “The sack of the Chairmen was shelved, because of their roles in checkmating insecurity in the State, alongside traditional rulers in their domains.

“When the security situation improves, and probably after the APC Congresses, because they are crucial to the success of the Congresses, then one can talk of their sack. But for now, they are key and strategic in ensuring security at the local governments.

“Also, during the registration/revalidation exercise of APC members in the State, the Chairmen were key and instrumental to the overall success of the exercise.

“The Chairmen were in charge of the exercise because they funded the logistics for the smooth success of the exercise” the source concluded.
