Micro blogging and social networking service, Twitter, has been shut down in Nigeria.

The shut down came into effect 12 midnight, in line with the directive of the Federal Government.

Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, in a statement in Abuja, cited the persistent use of the platform for activities that are capable of undermining Nigeria’s corporate existence, as reason for shutting down the platform.

A directive was, Friday night, given to telecommunication companies in the country to deactivate twitter by 12 midnight- an instruction that has now been carried out.

Checks reveal that between the hours of 3a.m and 4a.m tweets were not loading across all devices.

An attempt to refresh tweets returned the message “Tweets aren’t loading right now. Try again” on mobile, while on desktop, it was “This site can’t be reached.

Recall that Twitter had deleted a post by President Muhammadu Buhari for referencing the Civil War.
