Some political players and Leaders of Thought in Owerri zone, (Imo East Senatorial Zone) are staging a ferocious come back for Imo governorship in 2024 by marking the fourth anniversary of a declaration made at Egbu, in Owerri North Local Government Area, four years ago.

Termed the “Egbu Declaration”, it was the resolution of the people of the zone to occupy the governorship seat of the state after its perceived marginalization and violation of Charter of Equity, an unwritten but gentleman agreement that power should rotate between the three geo political zones in the State.

Owerri zone is one of the three geo political zones which make up Imo State. The zone is short-changed when it comes to occupying the governorship seat of the State.

Other geo political zones in the State, such as Orlu and Okigwe zones, have produced more state governors than Owerri zone since 1999 democracy returned to Nigeria.

Orlu zone has spent 18 years thus far on the saddle of governance of Imo State and will extend it to 20 years when Governor Hope Uzodimma completes his first term in 2024.

Former Governors- Achike Udenwa and Rochas Okorocha- who spent two terms of eight years each as governor of Imo State, are from Orlu zone.

Okigwe zone had produced Ikedi Ohakim as governor of the state who spent four years in office. He failed in his bid to be re elected in 2011.

Emeka Ihedioha from Owerri zone was elected governor of the state, but was sacked by the Supreme Court after seven months in office, making him the shortest time a governor has governed the State.

The 4TH Anniversary of the Egbu declaration, according to the organizers of the event, The Coalition For Owerri Reawakening, is to re- echo the injustice done to Owerri zone, and revive the quest of the zone to produce the next governor of Imo State

The event holds on Saturday, November 13, 2021, at All Saints Anglican Cathedral, Egbu, a a tiny semi urban settlement close to the Imo State capital, Owerri under the chairmanship of General Collins Ihekire, retd.
