Imo Politics: Watchdog Predicts Tense Political Climate In 2022

A tense political climate looms in Imo State in 2022, as political actors and players prepare for the 2023/24 governorship election

In its annual report on Imo State for the year 2021, a watchdog group based in the State, Imo Awareness Coalition, IAC, said “2022, though not an election year in the state will witness more politicking at a frenetic pace, as political players will intensify their pace and struggle to win elections in 2023/24 guber election”

The report came on the heels of a possible political marriage between two former governors of Imo State, Senator Rochas Okorocha and Hon Emeka Ihedioha.

The duo, formerly erstwhile political foes had met at the funeral of the mother of Uche Nwosu, Okorocha’s son in law, at Eziama Obire in Nkwerre Local Government Area of Imo State on December 22.

The IAC predicts that “the level or intensity of politicking in Imo State will be on the rise in 2022 and already the political situation in the state is already tense and charged with the opposition parties preparing the grounds for a come back at the seat of power in the State.

Part of the report reads “Several political blocs and factions in the State embedded in the two leading political parties- the All Progressive Congress, APC and the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP will be more active in 2022 as the jostle for political power gets intense.

“Imo State do have a huge number of political actors, the highest in the South East zone. And this translates to the fierce intensity in the scramble for political power which play out, up to when elections are held in the State.

“Governor Hope Uzodimma, the incumbent governor of the State and of the governing All Progressive Congress, APC, is expected to seek a second term in office and has to contend with opposition forces in the state with two former governors- Senator Rochas Okorocha and Emeka Ihedioha as arrow heads of the opposition in the State

“Though Okorocha and Ihedioha are of different political leanings, there are possibilities of an alliance between the duo and other opposition forces in the State which will certainly change the colouration and dynamics of Imo politics in 2022″ the group predicted.
