The United Kingdom says from Wednesday, 15th December, 2021, Nigeria and 10 other countries will be removed from its red list.

UK Health Secretary, Sajid Javid, while speaking to the UK Parliament, said Omicron had spread so widely that the rules are now less effective.

“Now that there is community transmission of Omicron in the UK and Omicron has spread so widely across the world, the travel red list is now less effective in slowing the incursion of Omicron from abroad,” he told the parliament.

“Whilst we will maintain our temporary testing measures for international travel, we will be removing all 11 countries from the travel red list effective from 4am tomorrow morning” he said.

Recall that the British government had placed Nigeria and some African countries on the travel red list following the confirmation of the new covid 19 variant, omicron in the affected countries.

The Nigerian government had threatened to issue a similar travel ban to the UK and some countries if the UK failed to rescind its decision.
