2022 will be a campaign year in Nigeria and Imo State will not be an exception.
The State will actively partake in National Assembly elections, expected to hold in February 2023, with campaigns expected to intensify in 2022.
The much awaited Imo State governorship election, is expected to hold between 2023 and 2024, but the intensity of the campaign will increase as politicians hit the hinterlands for campaigns.
Politicians and those seeking for elective offices in the State such as the Senate, House of Reps and State Assembly would embark on campaigns across the State to market their ambition.
Political parties are also expected to hold or conduct primaries in 2022 or early 2023, to elect or select candidates.
The campaigns in the State, are expected to unleash fresh round of political tension in the State.
Already, the political climate is already charged in the State, in the face of rising insecurity.
The issue of insecurity is expected to be a major campaign tool in the State, as the opposition intends to take advantage of it to whip sentiments against the ruling APC and the administration of Governor Hope Uzodimma.
Imo State was plagued by insecurity in 2021,as activities of unknown gunmen took centre stage.
Governor Hope Uzodimma has continually said insecurity in Imo State is sponsored by the opposition politicians, a claim which has been roundly dispelled by opposition leaders.
Former Governor of Imo State, Senator Rochas Okorocha, had accused Governor Uzodimma of sponsoring insecurity in the State.
His claims came on the heels of the manner his son in law, Uche Nwosu was arrested by the Police in the church on December 26 in Nkwerrre LGA.
Nwosu said he was abducted and fingered Uzodimma as the mastermind.
Governor Uzodimma has vowed to released the names of the sponsors of insecurity in the State.
