The declaration of intent to vie for Owerri zone senatorial seat by Former Secretary to Imo State Government, Hon Uche Onyeagocha, may have set the stage for a fierce battle for the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP Owerri zone Senatorial ticket.

Senator Onyewuchi is said to be seeking a second term after spending eight years in the House of Representatives.

He is yet to officially announced his re election bid.

Onyeagocha, a former member of the House of Representatives, had in a viral video on Thursday announced his intention to represent Owerri zone at the Red Chambers.

His declaration came on the heels of 50 years age limit set for the next Senator for the zone by a socio political group, Owerri Zone Patriots, OZP.

INNONEWS had exclusively reported in June 2021, that Onyeagocha will run for senate.

The report had precipitated panicky signs in the camp of the Senator, whose loyalists fired salvos at Onyegaocha and accused this newspaper of stoking the flame of discord between the duo.

A party chieftain in Owerri zone told INNONEWS on condition of anonymity that “With Onyeagocha’s declaration, Senator Onyewuchi is up against a major contender ahead of the party primary. And this is capable of unsettling his camp

Senator Onyewuchi has claimed to have embarked on several empowerment projects across Owerri zone, a feat he has consistently brandished as core reasons why he should return to the Senate.

However, his claims are faulted on the basis that the empowerment programmes are tailored to suit party members and stakeholders loyal to him, whom in return would vote for him during the party’s primary.

Last year, the Senator came on the spotlight of newspaper editors in Imo state, who rated him low in performance, urging him to show his much trumpeted projects to the media.

“The Senator has consistently brandished his numerous projects at every fora.

“FINE implores him to showcase these projects to the media.

“And we offer to embark on an assessment tour of these projects in Owerri zone, to ascertain their existence and functionality, to douse growing suspicion that some of our legislators showcase “internet projects”, the statement signed by Chinedu Egere and Chigozie Uzosike, Chairman and Secretary of the Forum stated.
