Former Councillors in Owerri zone, have debunked a report in an Owerri based local tabloid, which reported falsely, that it was only their colleagues elected during the administration of Governor Rochas Okorocha, that endorsed business mogul, Prince Alex Mbata, for Owerri zone senatorial seat come 2023.
The Councillors in a statement on Thursday and signed by its Chairman, Sir Chimdi Uzoma Chikwendu (KSC), said the newspaper report was twisted out of context, stating that they are members of the APC, core and unrepentant loyalists of Governor Hope Uzodimma.
The statement by the former Owerri Zone Councillor reads:
“Our attention has been drawn to a misleading report on ‘Watchdog newspaper” wherein it was alleged that ex Councillors in Owerri zone, who appealed to Prince Alex Mbata to contest for Owerri Zone Senate, were only elected Councillors under the past administration.
“The report was twisted out of context and is the imagination of those afraid of Prince Alex Mbata, his numerous humanitarian activities and his towering political profile.
“It is totally irrelevant to focus on which government we served as elected Councillors.
“What is paramount presently is, we are genuine members of All Progressives Congress, APC.
“We are also core loyalists and ardent supporters of our able, dynamic and performing Governor, Distinguished Senator Hope Uzodimma.
“We have continued to support unconditionally, the 3R mantra of the Uzodimma administration.
“Our appeal to Prince Alex Mbata to contest for Owerri zone Senate, is based on his several humanitarian activities carried out by his PAM Foundation.
“Prince Mbata is an illustrious son of Owerri zone, whose scorecard in Owerri zone is awesome.
“His Humanitarian programme, such as the N500 million Naira Empowerment Programme, which benefitted over 5,000 persons in Owerri zone, is unprecedented.
“Aside government, Prince Mbata is the highest individual contributor to human and infrastructural development in Owerri zone.
“He built roads in Owerri North and Owerri Municipal, and through his chains of businesses, he has employed hundreds of indigenes of Owerri zone.
“He did all these, during Governor Hope Uzodimma’s administration, in furtherance of his support for Governor Hope Uzodimma and the 3R government.
“He never did all these feats during the Rochas Okorocha government.
“We warn enemies of the people of Owerri Zone and those who resort peddle to falsehood against Prince Mbata, to leave him alone and engage themselves in meaningful activities to uplift the well-being of the people of the zone.
