A watchdog, the Imo Awareness Coalition, IAC, has said Imo State recorded a leap in provision of infrastructure, particularly in the areas of roads, in the past two years, but still ravaged by insecurity and rising unemployment.

The Coalition, in its quarterly report signed by its President, Emmanuel Okwu, said the state government focused its attention on reconstruction of roads poorly constructed by past administrations.

“Many roads were reconstructed in the past two years. Some of the roads projects are ongoing and nearing completion, mainly within Owerri municipal and environs. Intra-city roads are receiving considerable attention.

“The Owerri/Okigwe road, Owerri/Orlu road- major exit and entrance points in and out the State- abandoned for years, is nearing completion.

The Coalition however said “the State remains plagued by insecurity and rising unemployment, with the youths mostly affected. Despite high literacy rates and booming number of graduates in the State, there are no public service jobs. The private sector is weak and completely unstable.

“The activities of unknown gunmen are very much on the rise, particularly within the Orlu axis and other parts of the State, with feeble efforts undertaken by the State government and security agencies to quell the situation.

“Insecurity in parts of Imo State remain prevalent with innocent citizens killed by stray bullets, including allegations of extra judicial killings, arson and other forms of insecurity” part of the report stated.

The Coalition expressed worry that “inability by the state government and stakeholders to address insecurity in the state and devote considerable attention to tackle unemployment will further stunt economic progress and development in the State”
